East Campus is near the Student Recreation Center, Student Health Center and downtown Carbondale. This area offers three residence halls and two commons buildings.
Mae Smith and Neely Residence Halls
These 17-story high-rise residence halls house between 600 and 800 students each. The first floor of each tower is used for programming and staff space. Floors 2-17 house approximately 45 residents, depending on the number of single and double rooms. These high-rise buildings offer suite-style rooms (two bedrooms separated by a private bathroom), 24-hour desk service, kitchenettes, laundry rooms and student lounges.
University Hall Residence Hall
This 4-story hall houses around 350 students with semi-private bathrooms (with private shower and toilet stalls). This hall is designated specifically for juniors and seniors. Laundry rooms and community-style bathrooms are located throughout the building. A kitchenette is available on site. University Hall does not have a separate commons building but does offer commons areas within the building, including the lobby, administrative office, lounge and mail room.
Trueblood and Grinnell Commons
Trueblood Commons houses the Residence Life Office, a dining hall, the mail room for Neely Hall and the Department of Public Safety.
Grinnell Commons houses the Education & Outreach Office, the Multi-Cultural Resource Centers, the Gathering Place Snack Shop, programming space, student lounges and the mail room for Mae Smith and Schneider Halls.
Each high-rise is managed by two hall directors (full-time staff with master's degrees), who oversee approximately 16 resident assistants (undergraduate students) and two assistant hall directors (graduate students who are pursuing their master's degrees).
University Hall is managed by a hall director, who supervises an assistant hall director and eight resident assistants.
